Default Whistle from Transmission?

Hi guys,

Need a quick gut check here. I have 88k on my D2 and have developed a whistle from 40mph to 75mph (no way in hell I'm taking it over 75mph...).

Initially I though it was air somewhere whistling through the roof rack, lights, etc. or possibly vibrations from removing the anti vibration weights to add a rear diff guard, but driving down the highway, I can shift to neutral and the noise goes away. No noise in park or sitting with engine in drive nor is there any vibration at highway speeds.

The whistle does not change pitch when I speed up, it just gets louder. I replaced transmission fluid and transfer case oil this weekend and the noise is still there. Also lubed drive shaft and checked for play in wheels just in case.

So my question is - Are these transmissions/torque converters/transfer cases just loud and I never noticed it, or do I have an actual issue? Could it be something completely unrelated like PS pump? I have looked at a few other threads but have not been able to find answers: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...whistle-60556/

Thoughts?

Dan

Yep, its not like a whine - sounds more hollow than that. I just threw out PS pump in case I need to think outside the box on this one.
