Why are Discos selling for 20k+?
For example:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...-discovery-37/
Couldn’t you find an otherwise well-maintained Disco with an engine issue for $5k, then drop in a totally remanufactured motor from a top shop for $10k? $15k for essentially a brand new motor.
Is it the original parts factor that collectors like?

Because some one will buy it. I watched that auction like a hawk. As I have it's twin sitting in my garage. I don't get it. I sold a 04 w 111,000 w a winch bumper, lift, off road tires, super clean interior and extensive maintenance done for 11k and I thought I did really well. Now I wonder if I could have gotten 15-20 now.

You only see $20k Discos on BAT and possibly flippers who own stock in Armor All. BAT highly screens the vehicles they allow on the site. If you look at the prices other cars bring on that site you will know that they now cater to a crowd with a crazy amount of disposable income. Also, those are the cream of the crop vehicles (The Land Rovers anyway) and not an accurate representation of the actual market.
I think their presence does sort of normalize paying that much for a fine example of a DII... And 20k is still half of MSRP twenty years ago so it isn't completely outrageous... except for the fact that we all got spoiled by a large supply of fully depreciated models.
All that being said, deals are still out there and you don't yet need to spend that much to get a good one... Similarly if you plan to sell one at that price point, it better be perfect.

it's at 182,000 miles now and still looks good. planning a trip to the Snowy region in Wyoming in the next couple of years and this is the truck I plan on taking.
edit: people love the looks of these trucks. i have been stopped in parking lots and asked about my Rover. my son, who drives our '01 with a roof rack, winch bumper and spot lights, gets waves, smiles and lots of questions all the time. my daughter, she drives the other '04 that's stock except for larger tires, gets all kinds of looks and so on. but then there's not much cuter than a pretty girl driving a Discovery.
these trucks are boxy enough to look retro-cool and they endow on the driver a certain rugged mystic. eh, maybe i'm reaching with the last comment, but there's got to be a reason people like these things and are willing to pay hard earned cash dollars for them.

BAT is an interesting place these days - I remember when it was a bunch of mostly old air-cooled vw's that often needed a trailer to take them home
There are some other Landy specific sites that also seem to get pretty good $ for the right model
You can even find a fair number of D2's around $30K on ebay - not sure if they actually get shifted at those prices but I do believe Landy mark is becoming more desirable recently
IMO

Nice looking vehicle. Like the stock bumper look with lift, just looks clean and stylish. Yeah, there's some nice aftermarket bumpers out there, but stock just looks right, in my opinion. Just wish it had some strength to it.
As far as price goes...if the frame is immaculate and engine is functioning as required and all maintenance is up to snuff...might be in the ball park for a low mile example.
