Default Will not go into Low range

Hi guys, i just purchased a 1998 Land rover Discovery, Is there some sort of trick of getting the thing into low range? I put it in neutral and it will not budge forward, it will move slightly to the left but thats it. Overall im happy with the rover though Thanks for any input

Moving to the left locks your axles together. Don't go fast on dry pavement with it locked. This is the feature most with newer trucks envy. Going into low just gives you more torque, without traction control and the CDL locked, one tire can still spin leaving you sitting.

If you can't move it forward, you may have to beat it out. I have seen a procedure on the web, but can't remember where it is. Try moving it while slightly rolling. If I can find more info, I'll let you know.

The most common problem you are having is that you haven't shifted the t/case in a long while and the linkage has frozen up. First, don't foce it or you will bend the linkage arms.
You can tray power scrubbing the t/case and linkage from under the truck, let it drive and spray some lube on any linkage you can reach. Try shifting the t/case, be patient, if it still doesn't release, you will have to remove the console and go thru the floor to better clean and lube the linkage.
There is also a possibility that the saftey switch on the t/case has failed which will not allow the t/case to be shifted. If that is the case you may want to have a mechanic fix it.
Once you get it working, shift it at least once a monthe to keep everything working.
Good luck,
Mike

Pop the top off the shift handle and tighten the nut up and it will go all the way in to park,
then the key will come out.
