Thanks for the replys. How many gallons does it take to refill the system? After I put two full gallons in it was coming out bleed screw and about half full in overflow tank.

From RAVE:

Cooling system - V8 Engine:
⇒ Refill 24.2 pt
⇒ Fill from dry 26.2 pt

So that would be 12.1 to 13.1 quarts. Please use distilled water to refill. Tap water, and especially well water has higher mineral content and will have calcium form inside radiator, squeezing off passages.

The DI is 3 gal.
the DII is 2 gal.
That is US gal not Imperial gal.

Not talking about D1. This page is from D2 shop manual, right hand column is in US measure for NAS vehicles. 24.2 pt or 26.2 pt (dry).

Next page in manual says 13.5 pt (US) of antifreeze required to get to 50/50 mix.

D1 spec page says 23.9 pints (US).

Now I have a D1, and the rad seems a good bit larger than a D2, but more of it is tranny and oil cooler. And D2 had more coolant in all that crazy plumbing and external thermostat. I guess if there is any question, just drain all you can, then mix with distilled water and re-install, dispose of excess properly.

The Wix #24105 coolant test strips you can get at an auto parts store test 3 things: Nitrite levels, freeze point, and PH.

The DI has a 3 row radiator, the DII has a 2 row.
Thats why the DI has a t-stat temp of 192*F and the DII of 180*F.

If you use the 50/50 pre-mixed coolant there is no question as to the mixture, buy 2 gal if you have a DII, pour in what you can, bleed the system and you are done.

Well, you have to figure the contents of all the hoses, the heater core, the external thermostat, the water pump (same as a D1), the radiator, the block, and the coolant jug. We did have a post from a guy with no heat who had to add two gallons to get back to normal level. His truck was not overheating... by the gauge.

24 - 26 pints, thats 12-13 quarts, or around three gallons.

Of course, the RAVE could also have a mis-print.

Like Spike says, if you use 50/50 pre mix, less problems. You can also use one of those specific gravity (floating *****) testers, they will tell you if you are low concentration, but not very good at how much too much.
