Default Windscreen heating elements ???

Has anybody ever troubleshooted this? Either they just don't work that well, or mine has never worked at all. I see two 40 amp fuses and a relay (R8) for the heater that appear to be working and I'm getting power to both connections at the base of the windshield on either side under the hood. Any other suggestions on what to check? I have a small crack in the glass (to me it actually looks like a scratch in the glass that doesn't go as deep as the wires). Will a crack cause both sides of the windshield not to work? Should I have continuity in the two wires at the plug going to the windscreen? Any other things I should check, like grounds or something?

The two sides are independent from my reading. We had an ice storm yesterday and mine cleared 1/8" in about a minute and a half with the defrost mode on (18 degrees and the truck sitting all night).

The small crack should only make those elements not work.

If you have any cracks in your glass, that will usually kill the heating feature.

FYI i bought a 01 D2 with a massive crack from the bottom up on the pass side and believe it or not the heated screen still worked.

Well it's good to hear that when they do work, they work pretty well. I was never sure if mine did anything since the truck stays inside and I have the defrost blower going when driving, until yesterday when I had a good layer of ice built up that wouldn't come off with a scraper. I thought the heater would at least loosen up the ice some but it did nothing to it, meanwhile the rear defrost melted it away. I'm hoping that one crack would not disable the whole thing. That would mean each element is in series like those really annoying Christmas lights which is silly, then again the Brits have a bad rep with electronics. The RAVE has a really good description of how the path goes along with a diagram and pictures, it's just hard for me to follow. I guess I'll just have to read really slowly. It wouldn't be so bad if it were a nice, warm sunny day out.

i have an 03 with the heated windshield, and about 1/4 of the way over, from left to right, theres a 3" vertical section that doesnt melt, but the rest of the windshield heats up great.

Same issue here rayman...most of the windshield gets cleared in no time...great feature but there is a 2-3 inch gap right in front of the driver that doesn't seem to work...no cracks in the glass?

Interested to know if anyone has any ideas

i dont have any cracks in the glass. but in the spring/summer, i had some kid throw a rock at my truck while doing 40mph. it bounced off my hood and hit my windshield. it put two small surface chips about 1/8", and were 1/4" apart. but thats was the far right side down low a few inches above the wiper. its not cracked, just small surface chips. not worried about it cracking since its only slight surface. could get it filled so its less noticable, but it didnt make a pit to the laminate inside part, like most "cracks/chips"
