Default Winter Oil

Sup everyone. Im soon due for an oil change and as you can see from my sig i run rotella 15w40. I live in NYC where the winters can get cold. We can have a week with the temps being in the teens and 30's is the norm. Should i switch to rotella 10w30 for the winter months? Your input is appreciated

I'm in Philly we get cold here too. According to 2013 predictions Farmers Almanac it's gonna be a cold one. With 183k on the clock I plan on sticking w/ Rotella 15/40. Might toss in some sawdust. Hahaha

I don't like to run Synthetic in the Rover. But if it is going to sub 0 then Synthetic will help.
Will not get cold in NYC till January / FEB/
Then it is COLD.

If you peek at the oil chart in the shop manual, you'll see that 10W(anything) is rated for use down to 10F. The final viscosity figure does not matter on the cold. The first figure does, and a 5W(anything) oil is rated down to -30F. The Rotella 5W40 is a good oil to use, but some don't like synthetic.

In philly as well I keep 15w40 in as well I changed over to 20/50 for a bit this summer as I was running the highway and up in Cape Cod when it was hot... I have never worried about cold starts. it really does not get THAT cold. I do let it warm up longer before I drive

Park on top of subway grate or manhole cover. Keep that oil nice and toasty. Careful, when pulling out of your spot in the morning, be sure to check for sleeping homeless people.

Why is this a problem in NYC? Everyone knows the place is packed with expert mechanics, since you have to take the engine block inside each night. If it is inside, should be warm enough....

^Nice, I say just kick a match under that leaky beast. Those drips should be enough fuel to feed a small warming flame till morning.

For the winter or all year round if you wanted use Rotella T 5w40 Synthetic. Its what I use in Canada.
