Default Wiring a camera

I had planned to wire a dash camera to the courtesy light on the headliner by the mirror. It appears that there is not enough output at those wires. The camera thinks the battery is dead.

Does anyone have any idea on where would be a good place to tap into more power? I am trying to make it as unobtrusive as possible, it connects to a micro USB if that matters. I pulled it apart to get to the red/black wires.

I thought about the sunroof switches, but I would prefer an always-on wire, as opposed to only when the ignition is on.
It looks like it need 5bv 1.5amps, which should suffice, the lights are on a 5 amp fuse.

I think I may have to go to the accessory socket fuse, 32 on the interior panel. I would prefer to not take apart the interior, but that may be what has to happen. Unless there is a way to make it work with a power source in the headliner.

Thanks for the thoughts.

You should be able to push a wire behind the headliner at the windshield and then go down the a-pillar (very easy to remove the hole pillar) down to the fuse box on the left side.

I am good with that, but I wired directly to the auxiliary plug fuse and the camera says it has low power. That the 25 A fuse is not enough. I wonder if there is something else about the cable that matters? It is a very thin gauge.

Any suggestions on a USB cable that can be cut up? Or, is there something fundamentally wrong with cutting up a USB cable?

You should be able to get an extension USB cable to down to the fusebox under the steering wheel. I wired in a couple of cigarette lighter sockets down there (switched and unswitched), and have a USB device running from one of them through a plug-in transformer.

For whatever reason, i am not getting enough power (amps) from that fuse box. maybe a bad wire, or something. Seems like it should have been easy.

There are fuses up to 30 amps down there. More than enough power to run a little camera.
Sounds like your USB cable is the problem.

Not sure what dash cam you have but my Nextbase came with a nice hard-wire kit like this: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hardwir...?skuId=6346999

Generic ones on Amazon:
