Wobbly crankshaft
Hello all, I bought a 2004 Landrover Discovery 2 roughly 8 months ago and it's been nothing but issues, yet I still love it. I've fixed head gaskets, oil pump gears, a new front cover, new lifters, new pulleys, a new valley gasket, an inline thermostat, and a new radiator, checked over everything I can think of. Currently, I'm dealing with a wobbly crankshaft, resulting in a wobbling harmonic balancer. I've checked movement using a pry bar in all directions with the pan off (Front, back, Side to side, Up and down), and I can't get it to move at all. Attached is a video of the movement with a dial indicator to help you see "accurate" movement measurements. I'm not sure what this means or may entail, but I am willing to do anything to get this beautiful machine working again. Thank you!
what does the balancer look like? all cracked and worn looking? that might be your culprit and the cost of a new one is quite steep if I remember correctly. One of my discos was like that and I found a better condition used one and that helped.
Some questions:
What is the "clunking" sound that you hear that corresponds with each time the crank is moving off center?
Just listening to the cranking without watching the video...it almost sounds to me like you have a dead cylinder (compression wise). That cranking should sound like: nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah (steady & consistent (equal force needed to push each cylinder against the compression cycle)) but yours sounds more like: nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, NUH, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, NUH.
I'll be honest if you have done a head gasket and you have a slipped or slipping liner, it could have already beaten the head gasket to death again and you now have a dead cylinder (again)....same exact thing happened to me on my old 03 I think it managed to last a month or so before it did that to it....ended up having to get a salvage motor that was good (heard it run from cold to fully up to temp listening for slipped liner - they usually can't be heard from cold start but can once warm unless they are REALLY loose) and totally rebuilding it and pinning the liners to make sure it wouldn't happen on that one.

Photo appears to show rubber pulled away a bit from the center piece, but hard to say from just a photo. There is a company on-line that will refurbish balancers by removing the rubber and replacing with new, for less price.
99TEXASD2 - That is a great idea. When I did the head gaskets, I made sure to visually inspect each cylinder sleeve just in case something like that were to happen. They all looked the same. If I can, I will look from beneath while I have the pan off and get back to you. Thank you for the suggestion!
