I was searching for a single DIN nav unit that fit the dash without having to do major surgery on the dash or wiring harness. I came up with a few options. The Joying 6.2" fits very nicely without any issues. The depth of the unit matters as there is an OEM mount in the dash which interferes with longer bodied units. Here are a few pics of some options. The joying unit loads very quickly (android 10, and the reverse cam turns on nearly instantaneously). Also, I bought a nav map off ebay, the Israeli version, for ~30$. Takes a bit of patience to load the maps and APK, but there is no monthly fee, which is nice. The font is nice and user interface is easy to use. I bought the android version. The joying unit draws .003A in standby mode. You can find these nav units on amazon. Joying 6.2" It has a metal surround and does not take up much room. It has adjustable screen mounts, and fits well without having to modify the dash. Also, 4 channel output and wiring plugs that fit into disco 2 harness. Only need to add a few wires like steering wheel control. Also, it has a manual volume **** which is really nice. Also, joying has a GREAT sat antenna which pulls in GPS and GLONASS sats inside my home! CPU: UIS7862 12nm Dual ARM Cortex-A75 + Six ARM *** Ram: LPDDR4 4GB Rom:EMMC 64GB
the first pic is a cheap unit that does not have many capabilities. Second pic has nice nav, but image/gui is very small, and hard to see. also, volume control is touch, which I don;t want. Joying third pic has many options for surround and equalizer and a bunch of other things. But, it costs a bit more.....
so I finally made up my mind. I went with the slightly larger 7" Joying gps unit. The 6.2 was nice and the font size is the same on the slightly larger 7" unit. But the 7" fills the gaps nicely!! there is NO modification to the dash in order to fit the unit in place. The unit has adjustable mounting tabs on back. You do have to remove a plastic surround off the mounting base of the unit due to wiring harness mount interference, but it does not show or affect the mounting at all. You can adjust contrast with access code in the developer or user settings so the maps look great. I added a background high res screen shot of LR logo. As I said above, the sat antenna is great and really picks up everything overhead, even indoors. It is not a very expensive unit for what you get regarding android. I have yet to listen to the radio quality, but I do not expect it to be fantastic. I don't listen to concert quality audio in the disco anyway....
as far a route guidance, it takes a bit of time to get used to the quirks of the android system, but it's not hard. The touch screen is super fast, unit boots in 2 seconds if the constant memory power has not been interrupted. And as above, it draws a very low amperage in standby mode. There are powered speaker outputs as well as line level. Unit comes with standard ISO wiring harness and fits disco just fine with minimal mods. I really like the iGo maps and for the price on ebay, super value. I do not have to pay a monthly fee!
doing mock up mounting in this pic... NOTE: this is the unit with the manual volume control (which is really nice to have)
some more screen shots..... the color and contrast is much better than what is shown here... and you could hook up a Bluetooth OBD2 module and monitor functions of the car..like temp!
NOTE: the aftermarket android nav maps I used are 'licensed' to ONE unit only. So you can install it on only one GPS unit. The seller was nice and gave me a big discount for second map purchase which I installed on the 7"...If I could find out where in the nav code the unit ID is registered, then maybe I could change it. Sometimes there is an 'unlimited' license choice...but I have not found it yet....Trying to load a used nav program will load everything , but the state map files cannot be activated. maybe it's locked in the APK?......
Are you able to reuse the OEM rubber "finger" that screws into the back of the head unit and fits in the hole in the bracket behind the head unit when installed? If not, my concern is that the back of the unit will not be supported and will eventually crack the aged brittle dash bezel plastic. Already had that happen with the OEM unit missing the "finger". I have since reinstalled the "finger" and have also come across 3 of 4 dash bezels at Pick&Pulls in great shape that I have kept as spares.
there is no provision for a mounting dock for rubber foot at back of the joying unit. There are no mounting screw holes on back of joying unit. The joying unit is only 4" deep. The dash rubber foot mount is about 6" deep. Best to make a support sitting on top of the sheet metal dash mount which is located just below radio. Also, the torque you experienced on prior units is way less on this unit due to the large front screen balancing the unit. the balance point is less than one inch behind the front of the metal retainer cage. Also, the screen fits VERY well (almost perfectly) into the curved design of the dash as seen in my pic, lending additional torsional support.
Note: the screen is removable, but it is not easily removed, so that 'grab-it-n- go' like the old removable faces is not really an option.
Have you had a chance to get this out on rougher dirt roads or washboards? Only concern for me is my trucks take a fair amount of abuse in the warmer months and this looks like an awesome option unless it flops around while out and about wheeling and camping lol
I have a Joying unit with a smaller screen that attaches in the same way. Once you get the mounting sleeve locked into into the hole in the dashboard, it's in there securely and won't come out. The screen clips are very tight and won't come apart unless you really pull on them.
