Purchased an 2004 Disco @ 70K now at 79K and have been developing engine noise. Running 15/40 with wix filter changed a few times now. Engine is pretty noisy on cold start and gets quieter as engine warms although I can still hear it with radio off. I really thought it was a rod knock guess it still could be But I installed an oil pressure gauge thinking I would find low oil pressure, not the case seems fine 20psi idle hot and 55psi @ 2500rpm hot. Now thinking that I need to take a look at the rockers and rocker shafts. Any additional info is appreciated.

 

Listening to the valve covers with a stethoscope may help narrow it down.

 

update: changed oil, found small metal particles in oil also noise getting a little louder. I decided to pull pan and for whatever reason pulled #8 rod cap. Ouch! shows signs of heavy metal contamination,top down to copper and groove in crank. Crank mics out within spec. Pull oil pump, again shows signs of contamination but original machine marks visible in both sides along with some heavy scratches. No broken gears but both are pitted and crunchy. Oil pressure before tear down hot idle=16psi 2500=52psi. But some mornings would gain pressure very slowly and others jump up to 60psi. Anyhow pulled rocker shafts, a little wear at bottom of rocker shafts and also noticed a few spacer springs had rubbed through coating on shafts. From what I see all cam lobes look normal but its raining out and I haven't pulled intake yet. Sorry for the run on but I still don't feel like I have found the source of shavings and looking for suggestions. I would like to chock it up to a pump failure but i dunno? Thanks Don

Savanna, I'm not sure at this point. I'd like to but I really would like to avoid being here next year. Also thinking of pulling motor to have crank polished and assemble every thing in shop. I've got so many projects apart right now I'm afraid of misplacing things in the clutter, I did get intake off and cam & lifters are good.

 

One thing to consider is that there is a known issue with the relief valve in the front cover. At this point it is not going to fix your problems, but it could be related to your cause.

Yes it is. Would have been nice if the thread had reached a conclusion though. We need more happy endings on this forum.

 

your absolutely correct i would be nice if people end posts, so that you know if it was helpful or not. Cant blame it on DM telling everyone to pm him, he hasnt posted in monthes.

 

i would use my autel maxivideo scope to check the engine parts, and then trackle down the problem
