Here We Go Again, My LSX Swap Thread
The transfer from an older gm i think 85 86 mounts on the passenger side, the problem we're having is aligning the rear driveshaft. How did u do it on yours?
If it doesnt work how it should we'll have to cut and weld a gm diff. unit.
I lowered the engine just enough to clear the hood and modified the pan. But if everthing works out fine at the end we have plans on fixing the engine up and swapping in an aftermarket unit or an ls6 manifold but that is in the future. Total sleeper and kill a couple of k5's that terrorize the sand dunes over here.

Yeah, I kinda misspoke there, I guess what I ment was that it's time for shocks and springs so I might as well get the lift kit.
The TF 2" seems to be very popular, is there a particular reason NOT to go 3"? Is that the point you need longer brake hoses and or something else?

I have been told an NP 205 is passenger side output, but I am not sure what truck it needs to be from. There are endless models of NP 205's out there from all different makes. I assume an 85 or 86 NP 205 that was mated to a Turbo 350 might work.... shaft spline size and count is an unknown.
There is a little info on my rear driveshaft buried in this thread, but basically I rolled the dice and trusted my driveshaft builder that he could make one live at the extreme angle generated by a "center out" transfer case and an offset rear axle. I gave him the estimated angles and he suggested "High Angle" u-joints on both ends. You will have to eliminate the Rotoflex if you have one, cut out a section of floor board (maybe) and cave in the top and side of the muffler (or get a smaller one).
The two driveshafts are the only part of the whole project that I didn't do 100% by my lonesome, and ironically I think they are the weak points in the whole conversion. That is unfortunate, since the front driveshaft was already a weak part of this truck. However, this can be fixed with enough cash thrown at it.
I have kicked around the idea of a divorced transfer case, I think there is room in there but the rear shaft would be very short and the front would be VERY long.
Good luck and hang in there.
Best supplier for that one? Lucky 8 maybe?
Thanks Dusty! That answered a big question I had. I feel the weight on the front of the truck is very close to stock. I have man handled the GM and stock TC and transmissions all over my shop, and the GM units are definitely lighter.
I mention this only because the general consensus is that the LS motor is heavier than the Rover V-8.
I am still undecided about a winch, I probably need one since I am subject to go off on my own at the drop of a hat. (I'm too old and ornery to have any friends) Is a receiver mounted winch even a possibility? I have had horrible luck with my winches in the past succumbing to rust, condensation and general bad weather.
Now for tire choices.....
yes, I put a receiver on my 1st d2. I just did a double cross member set up with the receiver squared straight out.
my vote is go with the harbor freight winch and cradle. super cheap and I have been extremely impressed. it is slow but it is reliable
good luck on tires
treadwright prices seem to have climbed a bit, but still affordable.
every time I get a set of tires.....I want something different a week later

like i'm shopping with my wife or something

I just looked at the HF 9K winch and receiver cradle. $330 + govt. extortion fees for the set. Weighs in at 100lbs.
I too am looking at the TW Guard Dog retreads. I have been known to bust a tire for no good reason, if they are just as good as new ones but cheaper, why not?

I can never seem to find the tw tires in the sizes that I want, coupled with the pattern I want. I have wanted to try them, though.
I think we share the same # of friends and propensity for busting tires. i've had everything from 1/2" rebar to part of a radio flyer wagon, in my tires. I found a hunk of bone once.

Hi, hows the driveshaft holding up? thats my current debate. i dont feel sure about running the driveshaft in such a weird angle and with the 3 inch lift im going for. Maybe its just me.
How does everything feel, the drivetrain? Have u tried offroading it?
I should have mine back next week from the shop.
