Default Parking Brake malfunction on 2005 Range Rover Sport

Hi

My 2005 Range Rover Sport has developed a fault whereby the parking hydraulic parking brake has applied itself without me pulling the swith in the vehicle. I am being told by my usual garage in Dubai, that the motor is at fault, but that the whole assembly including the control unit will need to be changed as it comes as a complete assembly. The total cost for the part is in the region of 800 Pounds. Has anyone else come across this problem, and can offer any advice or workaround. I assume the unit cannot be disconnected as a temporary measure until I can find a more competitive price?
