Default Parking Brake Malfunction

I have seen numerous posts regarding the electric parking brake failing (screeching sound upon application). I took my 06 LR3 to the dealer in Vienna - they wanted $1200 to repair. Tried Alexandria - they wanted $2300 ($1200 for the EPB actuator and $1000 for labor)! Why the discrepancy?

I can't afford the $1200, much less the second quote (had to pay Alexandria $180 for this bad news).

I think I am going to try to replace the actuator myself. Anybody have experience doing this? I priced the actuator - at Bethesda - at $735 (that's less than $1200) and $329 online. Any special tools or proceedures required to accomplish the replacement?

I appreciate any help offered.

yeah, you have to disconnect a bunch of brake lines and pull out the shoes, and hook up ids to get them to engage correctly then set them and then bed them in. They completely suck. Alot of times they start making noise from rust and dirt. try cleaning them off and roughing up the shoes with some sandpaper and then set them ten clicks off to see if it works. if it doesn't then you need a new epb actuator.

I did not know that.

Yeah, and Land Rover even brags about it:

Land Rover goes beyond the conventional handbrake lever with the easy-to-use Electric Parking Brake technology. EPB provides thoughtful assistance for those tricky hill starts, and can be released either with a switch or simply by driving away. It also helps ensure a more relaxed driving experience in stop/start city traffic

They have automatic gearboxes. How tricky can a hill start be?
I've quit wondering why there are so many incompetent drivers on the roads.

.
Thanks. I'll try that. The parking brake is great when it's working properly. Don't know if it's related but the problem started not long after LR Alexandria did the 60K service.

I don't get it with a manual either, if a person has bothered to learn how to drive.

Well I have made this prediction before and I will make it here publicly for the world to see...with all of the electronic gadgets on new cars to make them "safer" people will never learn how to drive on their own and when the "safety feature" fails people will crash and die because they will have no real world driving knowledge.
Stability control, hill start assist, ABS, back up camera/monitor, blind spot notification all equals idiots behind the steering wheel.

But what I really want to know is how are old people going to drive with all of the drive by wire throttles and the brake over ride system on those drive by wire systems.
They wont beable to drive with 2 feet anymore...so maybe that is a good thing.
