Unhappy 05 Freelander leaking coolant HELP!!

My 2005 freelander SE 60k miles overheated this summer (on a 90 degree day), i looked under hood and the coolant was gone. I refilled the coolant and 2 weeks later (very hot out) the coolant was almost empty again. Took it for a pressure test and mechanic found no obvious signs of leaking but said it could be leaking internally. The oil is not murky but the cap has had some greasy looking gunk in it. Its been 2 months and the truck is now just slowly losing coolant. We've been topping it off a little and not driving it alot. Dealer said its a known issue and either replace the engine or try Bars Leak to buy some time. Does this work? Can it cause other problems??

Try the bars leak like he said. Just do it correctly. Make sure the coolant isn't leaking inside the vehicle with the heater core. Very common.

To spot coolant in the oil add coolant dye and change the oil after it a thousand miles and save some oil and check with a black light.

Take a look underneath the intake manifold, if you see coolant puddled on top of the block it's leaking from your thermostat housing. I just replaced mine, it wasn't that tough of a job. You can buy a kit from roverparts.com, $200 for intake gasket and thermostat housing...dealer wanted $1400 to do the job.

I have a 1998 1.8 petrol Freelander that is losing coolant. It is NOT the cylinder head casket because the oil is not discoloured or foamy. It only seems to lose coolant when the engine has cooled overnight. The local Guy Salmon main agency has had it in for two days but can find no leak. What can I do?

Bob,
it sounds like a water pump. They usually will leak when you shut down the motor...and I think that has the internal water pump but not sure.

Under the engine, next to a vertical gasket there is a hole through which drops are falling. The hole it looks that is design there to be. Please help if you have any idea what is the cause for this leaking. thank you very much
