2002 Freelander
I would not recommend to my worst enemy to buy this car. I bought mine used in august 2005. I should have known from the beginning to get rid of it, but here it is 2 years later that I am finally getting rid of this car.
The first month I had the car, I had it to the dealership 3 times. I swear they rigged my car so the check engine light would come on everytime I left the dealership parking lot. First problem- my bank 1 and 3 vacuum ports needed replaced- $182.72.
Then my sunroof would not close- no big deal, they charged me $9 for it (which completly amazed me) but needless to say, I have no idea what they did, because my sunroof still did not close! So I have not had my sunroof open since 2005.
10 days later, my check engine light is on again- This time it is my oxygen sesnsor. Another $289.52.
15 days later- surprise! the check engine light is on again. This time They replace my air intake hose. $157. Oh yeah, my rear windshield wiper also stopped working, add odd another $65.
So at this point, i go another 6 months with no check engine light. I take my car in for an oil change (which may I add they charge $98 for) and what do you know, 2 days later, my check engine light comes on again!!!! (At this point, i was thoroughly convinced they rigged my car)
This time, they said my intake plenum would need replace- however they did tell me that it would cost approx $1100 to replace, but it would not impact my performance of my vehicle. so i figured why waste $1100, when the total of my bill was already at $850.... my other problem was that my intake manifold gaskets were causing lean fuel mix... which cost me $850 to replace.
Well, i made it almost another year with no check engine light. During this time, my car was running horrible and i was convinced now that they totally disabled my check engine light. So I take it in for my inspection, dreading the worse. Lets just say I jumped for joy when mybill was only $415. This time, ijust needed my front brakes replaced, and i didget an oil change, so the price wasn't too ridiculous, which is sad whenitshould only cost $50 for inspection time.
So,in my head, I kept sayingI need to get rid of this car, but I never did it. But then a few weeks ago, I wassitting in my car waiting for my friend to come outof the store, and my temp guage redlines.Well, let me back track, two days before, I was driving my car and the airconditioning got really hot, So i figured that went out and I needed to get it refilled. (my temp guageat this time wasstillat the middle- which is where it is always at) Then I got home that day,and my fans kick on full speed after I parked my car and stayed on for 5 minutes (it sounded like my carwaspreparing for take off, thats how loud it was) But anyways, back to the part where mytemp was red lined. I turned my car off, and check the coolant- bone dry, I filled it up with a gallon of water and after letting it sit, i turned it on and it was back to normal. Then I kind of forgot about it, until it did it again the next weekend, same problem. So, i began carrying a gallon of water around with me, and had to water my car every morning like a plant. (This time, i called the Land Rover dealer, and they couldn't get me in for another week and a half, so I really had no choice but to drive it) I had my friend look at it and he took the engine cover off and said it looked as if the thermostat was shot, but the problem was it was on the bottom of the engine ,and you need to take the top of the engine off to replace it. Sooooo I get the call from land rover this morning about how much it is to fix it,and it is $666.95 (perfect number.. right?) Needless to say... I am on my way to go look at new cars... Never in a million years would I recommend buying this car to ANYONE.

oh yeah, i forgot to add that my rear passenger side window moter rusted out and needed replaced. I bought the part and replaced it myself (which was very simple too mayi add... ) The part was $190ish, took 5 minutes to replace. Land Rover wanted $550 to replace.
It's too bad your FL didn't work out for you. So, far i've been a happy camper with my 02. While I do agree this vehicle is a white elephant you still cannot find another vehicle that can be taken right out of the showroom and onto the trails without mods like the LR. The FL have alway's been a hit/miss type car. Remember the Alpha Romeo Milano? I had one, ran for 5 years with no problems. Others complained out the -ss about the cars issues. Same for the FL.Good Luck. If you have decent milage still on it under 75K, you still can buy a warranty...
wait a min. so if you have an 02 FL with less than 75k you can get a factory warrenty? cause i just got my 02 FL and it has 65k on it and well with all the war stories that i have read on here so far it doesnt sound like a bad idea.
oh yeah by the way i am throwing an error code p0171 i know its an o2 but which of the four any clues?
