Default 2002 Freelander Noise

Hello All,
As with most that join these things I'm having a problem. My wife has a 2002 Freelander, I think it's a SE. It has 60,000 miles. The check engine light is on, after having it checked they said the code said a major fuel leak. The thing is there is not a fuel leak, at least we have not seen any kind of a leak. Along with the light being on, there is a ticking noise coming from the top end of the motor. It sounds like a valve ticking or a small exhaust leak. All this happened after the switch in the shifter went bad and was replaced. The switch I'm talking about is the one that allows you to go from full auto to sport mode to manual auto. The noise started very small right after the shifter was replaced, and has gotten bigger. Any ideas?
