Default 2003 Freelander Diagnosing Brakes failure

I'm a newish owner of a 2003 Freelander. It was bought from a gent who was trying to take a non running one and putting it together with parts from a Junk yard wreck. To say the least he was over his head (I think) or at least very frustrated with the amount of work it took to get it working. *So I don't plan on going back to him as I think this was his first and last experience with any sort of Land Rover.

Other then issues with the rear window (Now fixed) its been great until a couple of months ago when the brakes totally failed. When I push the brake pedal it goes all the way to the floor and has very little braking action. It was suggested that after being parked for weeks I needed to pump the brakes. I did this and it makes a whooshing sound when pumped and it seems to make the pedal stiff momentarily but I would not count on this working. I inspected the brake fluid level and its right on the proper line so I am assuming this is not the issue which is unfortunate in that I made a purchase of a master cylinder. Sigh... The brake booster is my current suspect but its below freezing and having frost bitten my hands years ago I want to spend a minimum of time standing outside fiddling with the wrong thing.

In addition the engine seems to run rough when cold which gets better but the crude scan tool I've used keeps telling me about cylinder 3 miss fires which I'm told is a generic error that happens often and might not have anything to do with Cylinder 3 but more likely is my inexpensive scan tool.

Anyway I'm trying to put 2 and 2 together and wondering if the booster is perhaps leaking and the loss of vaccum to the engine is what might be causing it to start cold rough?

I guess I'm wondering if anyone with more experience with this could suggest steps to diagnose what is going on?

*Its still not as cold as it gets in Minnesota so this (And my poor fingers) are pondering buying an inflatable garage.
