Question Electrical advise.

Hi I am wanting to put some roof lights on my Freelander 1, I am wanting them to be the same as the side lights and to be powered at the same time. Can I connect the power wire of the roof lights to the power wire of my side lights? So when I switch my side lights on, the roof lights come on at the same time. Or would this cause me problems? I have looked on YouTube and the more I view the more confuse I become haha. They say use a relay and fused lead. So could do this power lead from the side lights with a fuse wire go to the relay(86)wire from relay (87) to the lights (roof) relay(85/30) to earth. I'm starting to question my note now haha. PLEASE someone help me before I blow my poor car up haha.
