Default Freelander diff problems

I'm in desperate need of advice.
i bought a 2000 reg freelander, cheaply it is a 2.0 td
it was without its prop when i bought it but now i have a horrific droning noise and the diff is covered in thick oil obviously being like this for a while. Can i remove the rear half shafts and continue to run the car so the diff isnt turning at all? Will the wheels and all other components still be ok without the halfshafts there? like the wheel bearings for example?

thank you

If you did that, wouldn't the rest of the oil run out of the holes? That solution would not last very long.
