Default Mystery Coolant Leak

I'm helping a friend do some minor repair work/maintenance on his 2002 Freelander.

The teardown started when the motor started leaking copious amounts of coolant from an unknown location. After getting it apart, it appears that the coolant is coming out of a sort of "chute" in the block, under the rear head, next to the timing belt tensioner. Does anyone know where this passageway leads or why coolant would be running out of it? My only guess is that it leads up to the head, and a head gasket leak is the culprit, but I can't find any suitable diagrams to help.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
The custom fabricated cam-holding tool will be available for purchase when this thing is back together [8D]

Thermostat housing and bypass pipe. Located in the valley between the heads. They are common for leaking and when bad enough, can look like coolant is leaking out of the timing cover area.

I just had this problem. One of pipes, probably the short fat one, that attaches to the thermostat has cracked. You have to take the intake off to get to it. What a place for a thermostat.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check it out tonight. At this point, taking the intake off is no big deal. It'll be much better than a head gasket.

Anybody have any suggestions for removing the upper intake? I got the 4 bolts that hold it to the lower intake, and the two brackets that hold it to the rear valve cover, but it still doesn't want to come off. What am I missing?

Mine was difficult to get off also. Just carefully pry around on it. The seals make it difficult to remove. I bought a thermostat kit that included a new intake gasket and new seals.

Yup, it was those seals making it really difficult to remove. The culprit turned out to be the thermostat housing. The bottom of it was broken, right where the o-ring is. Thanks for the help guys!

you guys the cam is not going to spin enough to damage the valves. Ive done many belt changes on freelanders the ruler and the paint sticks make me sick, so stop posting them. Lock the crank (3/8 inch drill bit in the hole in the front) and look at the cam marks. scott

I replaced the thermostat, the tube behind it and the long tube that runs from the thermostat towards the water pump without removing the manifold. It wasn't the easiest thing in the world but can be done without having to remove the manifold. Patience, extensions and swivel sockets came in handy. Wouldn't want to do it again.
