New (Excited) Land Rover Owner – Help Diagnosing My 2002 Freelander TD4 Issues!
Hey everyone!
I’m absolutely thrilled to finally join the Land Rover family with my first ever Landy – a 2002 Freelander TD4! Always wanted one, and now I finally have it. But as with any new (to me) adventure vehicle, it comes with a few… quirks. 😅
Hoping to tap into the wisdom of this forum to help diagnose and (hopefully) fix a few issues I’ve noticed so far. Let’s dive in!
Cheers,
(A very excited but slightly confused new Landy owner)
I’m absolutely thrilled to finally join the Land Rover family with my first ever Landy – a 2002 Freelander TD4! Always wanted one, and now I finally have it. But as with any new (to me) adventure vehicle, it comes with a few… quirks. 😅
Hoping to tap into the wisdom of this forum to help diagnose and (hopefully) fix a few issues I’ve noticed so far. Let’s dive in!
1. Mysterious Grinding Noise from the Rear
- I hear/feel a grinding sound when accelerating, especially when turning tightly (roundabouts) or going uphill.
- It happens at both low and high speeds but only when I’m on the gas.
- Could this be the rear diff? Diff mounts? Transmission? Something else? I’d love some guidance before I start throwing parts at it!
2. Rear Trunk Window Woes
- The window rolls up just fine using the interior button, but it won’t roll down.
- When I press the down button, I hear a clicking sound about 10 times, but the window doesn’t move.
- When I open the trunk, the window should lower slightly—but it doesn’t. I have to manually force it down a little to get the trunk open, and once the trunk is open, the window drops all the way down on its own.
- Sounds like a cable issue? Or am I looking at a regulator/motor problem?
3. Steering Feels Stiff
- The power steering works, and the fluid is topped up, but the steering still feels heavy.
- I’ve been driving small, modern cars for years, so maybe I just need to adjust to the feel of a proper 4x4? Or should I be checking something else?
Cheers,
(A very excited but slightly confused new Landy owner)
1. I would drain and look at the rear diff fluid and see if it is shiny/metallic looking as it sounds like the diff is unhappy
2. No clue
3. Is the pump whining or groaning? Any bubbles in the fluid at the reservoir?

Thanks for the info ArmyRover!
I'm going to check out the rear diff fluid and check for whining or groaning as well as bubbles in the resevoir.
Give me a couple days to check all that out. Once I've done that I'll follow up.
Thanks again!!

HEY @ArmyRover !
Just wanted to follow up with you.
In the end the issue was the driveshaft mounts or supports. Replaced those and the noise/feeling stopped.
