Default 1995 RR County Lower Tailgate Plastic Tabs

I purchase a used 1995 Range Rover County Classic. On the lower tailgate, I notice two tabs sticking up out of t he top. They are abut a third of the way in from each side. The tops of the tabs look broken off as they have jagged tops.

I got the Rave manual, and looked at many pictures online. I just can't seem to figure out what the hell those tabs are supposed to do. They keep scratching my arms when I reach down into the bed with the tailgate up.

Anyone know what the hell those are for?

they should be connected at the top like a handle to lower the gate

I was wondering the same, but mine are small .040" bumps so no forearm lacerations....
