Default 1999 HSE Fuel Filter location

Where is the fuel filter for a 1999 HSE? When I try to start the vehicle cold I have to crank it several times before it will start. I figured I would start with the fuel filter and progress from there. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I believe its an internal part of the fuel pump. Mine is located on the passenger side of the vehicle and looks something like this: . But I think when they switched to BOSCH, they decided to put the fuel filter in the fuel pump.

About where on the passenger side? I have seen something that we had to remove the rear wheel?

oh.... probably 3/4 of the way back. Its been awhile. Depressurize your fuel rail before you proceed. Do you have a copy of the service manual from greenoval? Its free, just go to their site. It will give you a detailed description of how to do the job and exactly where things are located on your year. I am almost certain the filter is internal on yours though, and can only be changed if the pump is replaced.

take a picture of the engine. That will determine the diagnosis. if it is a bosch its internal to the tank and you need to pull the tank. But they are unlikely to fail. We have issues with fuel pump relays and crankshaft position sensors going bad.

and on occasion the splice in front of the vehicle goes bad causing no power to the pump past the inertia switch. rare but a voltmeter can tell you how to detect it.

If you open the hood and see a 4.0 or 4.6 stamped on the intake plenum then it is a GEMS and the filter is on the frame rail in front of the rear tire.
