2000 Range Rover HSE info.
Hi guys.
I am considering purchasing a 2000 RR HSE. Has 94,00 miles. Air Suspension was converted to Coil at 84,577, new Bosch spark plugs, Bosch wires and new gasket, new hood sensor pin and new Bosch serpentine belt installed, oh, and new tires too.
Test driving this RR was excellent, really handled well, no steering vibration, bizaar noises, engine looks clean, and yes power steering fluid was full and has no leaks - WOW. Also, should I be concerned with the timing belt? when is it recommended to replace? costly?
Owner has really taken decent care of his RR and with the price of gas can't afford to keep it, that said, he's selling at $5000.
Ultimatley it's my decision but I wanted to post this info in the hope I can hear from other 2000 RR HSE ownerswith their opinions/ pros & cons toward this vehicle and what you've read.
Thank you

First thing you wanna do is check the coolant and the oil. With a price that low, he might just be trying to dump it after an overheat. These engines are very sensitive to overheating, and if its driven into the red, youve got block/piston/gasket issues.
Its quite possible he is just worried about gas and is trying to sell quick, but just do some checking
Our 2001 4.6SE has about the same mileage, and we had to switch to coils at 81k. Only other problem we've had was the door lock linkage failing and costing a few dollars. It's a great truck!

Wolfpack, thanks for the input. So what are some tell tale signs of good or bad coolant?
I can tell you that the owner has always serviced his RR at the local LR dealer (had invoices to prove). He drives about 2 hours a day to & from work, has had it up to his eye ***** in gas money.
I guess my real concern is the miles (90k plus). It did drive beautifully though, pretty smooth.
Thanks guys

Sounds like it is probably a good buy. Also, these engines have a timing chain, not a belt. As far as the coolant goes, check the level and make sure it has Dex-Cool(orange) and not green coolant and ask to see the history. It is worth the money to take it to your local dealership or reputable import shop for a buyer's inspection, so have it done before you buy the vehicle. People bring vehicles in to my shop all the time for a buyer's inspection after buying the vehicle only for us to find numerous issues such as leaking head gaskets that were not cleaned during detail and are not visible from the top. $100 now could save you thousands later.
Buyers inspection is definitely a good move.
The biggest thing is that the coolant is clean. If it's dark colored, murky, or the dreaded chocolate milkshake appearance, close the hood, throw the keys back to the owner, and get outta there
But it wouldnt necessarily have to be orange Dex-Cool coolant....just about everything out there is organic acid coolant (OAT Coolant)...even the prestone green stuff.

2nd gen range rovers are great trucks, well made, and very reliable. the value as of late has dropped significantly. But gas $ are going down, so its probably a good time to buy one for cheap. A simple block test will tell you if there is any engine damadge due to overheating.
Didn't know about the organic stuff, it's good to know. However, not all green coolants follow that rule and even dex begins to corrode metal after too long. LR's are tricky when it comes to coolant.......all of them.
