Default 2002 4.6HSE Overheating

I live in the United Arab Emirates and have 2002 4.6HSE which has been giving me some overheating grief recently. I’m know very little about cars/engines etc.

- First time it overheated during idling, I refilled the reservoir and got it to a mechanic ok who replaced the thermostat only – they tried to patch a leak around the hose into the top of the radiator
- Eventually the leak into the hose in the radiator got worse and combined with the reservoir hose leaking it was losing too much coolant to last a 10 min drive. I took it to a different (LR specialist) mechanic who replaced the radiator but said the problem was the fan not working due to a crack and short in the fuse box so I got that replaced.
- The car has been fine since then – although the temp needle sometimes flicks slightly higher than vertical which it never did before.
- Over the weekend I did a 700km trip including freeways and about 120kms offroad with some long, slow hillclimbs and had no probs. I checked the reservoir levels regularly and nothing seemed to be missing.
- Yesterday I had a 160km open road drive but as I was parking I noted the temp start to rise drastically. I turned it off and checked the coolant which needed about 2 Litres (~1/2 Gallon) to get it back to right level.
- I took it to the mechanic who said the reservoir needed replacing because of a slight leak and see how that goes, if not fixed then he says the head gasket needs replacing. There seems to be a lot of pressure in the reservoir while running but not a lot in the thick radiator hose. Is this normal?

I don’t really want to take it to the dealer who will charge me a mint just to lift the hood, but the other guy doesn’t have much English so I need some background knowledge/advice before I let him loose cos he will just replace what he feels like and may not solve the problem.

It has never overheated during open road running, only during idling or slow driving (in traffic etc) even though temps over here are daily over 40 deg C (104F).

I have seen plenty of advice for pressure-testing the cooling system – I assume this will identify any leaks but may not necessarily be the problem. Will a compression test of the cylinders confirm a head gasket failure (or other such issues)?

Any help/advice/sympathy will be much appreciated!

Cheers
