91 Classic Fuel System from Hell
Please let me play something by you.
1. 91 RR. 135,000 Runs good. Drove 4 hours last week in one stint. Nothing strange. Parked car.
2. Two days later car will not start.
3. Checked the spark to plugs
4. Checked the Gas
5. Checked the fuse to fuel pump
6. Now this is odd - Checked the Fuel pump – getting 5.4 volts from each of two leads to the pump.
a. Removed pump
b. Removed pump motor (being a genius, thinking that certainly it would be the brushes in the motor.)
c. Tested it just for kicks on the 12 volt battery. Runs great.
d. Reassemble and re-test pump.
e. Clear all hoses
f. Install in truck
g. Check hoses to fuel filter.
h. Replace fuel filter.
7. Turn the key on and not sound of a pump and nothing out of the pump.
8. Crank the starter no sound of a pump and nothing out of the pump.
9. Check all leads and connections to coil.
10. Checked the spark to plugs
11. Checked the Switched relays on the passenger side.
12. Checked the rollover switch and wires to it under the driver’s seat.
13. Threw my tools all over and screamed.
You got any ideas?
How much DC should be getting to the pump?
I’m stuck.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

JP,
Lets see, 91 NAS Classic. The fuel pump module has both the pump and sending unit in it. Are you sure you checked the pump Volts and not the sending unit volts ? But you didn't hear the pump run. Hmm... The pump needs 12V. Check the connector in the LR fender well for corrosion. Does your coil have spade type connectors ?

JP,
Do yourself A favor and eliminate the spade connectors on the coil. Unbolt using A 8mm socket, the male terminals. Crimp on new eyelet terminals and bolt directly to the coil terminals. Do one at A time to avoid switching. If they aren't bad now, they will be soon.
The fuel pump connector has four pins. Two are for the sending unit. One will have A 5 volt reference voltage. The pump supply pin will only show 12V for A few seconds after key on.
Try not to get upset. Just pour yourself A New Castle Brown Ale !
Cheers !

My '95 has a fuel cut-off device under the hood. Have you checked that? Mine got tripped at a car wash once and luckly there was someone else there that knew about it. I think it was a press on the top and it reset itself.
Thanks for the advice. I'll fix the coil etc.
I see the 5v reference at the pump.
Now, this is a 91. The 95 does have the inertial or rollover switch in the engine compartment.
I found the 91 under the back of the driver's seat. To get in there you have to have the hands of a small asian, narrow shoulders, etc. So I dislocate my shoulders and go to it. Cut the suckers off and connected them directly. Figure if I roll it I should burn with it.
I have no power however to this switch.
Now, in the 95 workshop book that I have been using, it shows a fuel pump relay under the back of the passanger's seat. The genius in me caused my wife to take out the Owner's Manual from the door box of the 91. Schematics!!!! The one in the book does not show a relay and the fold out does show a relay.
Any idea where in the hell RR put the fuel pump relay in 1991??
