Default 93 classic 4.2 alternator belt

having trouble finding alternator belt for this vehicle. need belt that goes from power steering to alternator. have bought 2 online and both are to big. one from advance auto and the second one I called atlantic british and explained the set up and got the same belt. mine runs from the power steering pump to the alternator. power steering has double pulley and the belt is a poly, not a v belt. have the same set up on a 92 classic 3.9 and it runs a v belt instead of the poly. this does not run from crank over power steering to alternator which is the belt i've been getting. this is the only set up i am seeing for v8's, but i am seeing the same routing on the 200tdi in the work shop book. if someone has the same set up on their classic can you tell me the correct ordering number for this belt and where it can be found. thanks in advance for any info that you can give me.

was really looking for someone who has the same set up that knows what i/m talking about, not someone sitting in a chair looking at a computer screen. 0-2 that way.

I chuckled just a little bit at that....

I have the same setup on my '94 4.2.. when I get home tonight I'll take a look... If I can't get specifics for you on part number for that belt then I'll just pull mine off and measure it for you... the dimensions should point you in the right direction.

Pm you later on today.

Default Not Sure

This is kooky but I may have found a problem from a PO... Believe me, it IS probable with all the screwy repairs I've had to deal with and correct but it may also be correct... I can not confirm yet.

Goodyear 4040490 4pk 1245 that is 49" of "effective length" and 49.75" outside length. 4pk means 4 ribs...

I researched a bunch of suppliers and articles but I found varoius possibilities and part numbers. Nothing matched that number I have in place on my 4.2

Sorry this is not a definitive answer but my belt works...

thanks for trying but that is the same size that i've been getting. mine goes directly from ps pump to alternator. i have a 92 parts car that is 3.9 with the same set up and its belt is about 3 inches to short. i have the workshop manuel and the only set up like what i have is on the 200tdi engine. ps pump has double pulley for 2 belts, one from crank to ps pump and the other from ps pump to the alternator. will take it to napa to try and match up. thanks

Default hmmm

I have the exact pulley setup as you I believe. Is the pulley on the PS pump setup with one V and the other one (forward most) is smooth as though the back of a belt is supposed to ride on it?

The reason I ask is because as counterintuitive as that setup may seem it is factory and correct to have the long 49" belt run from the crank pulley OVER the smooth face of the outer portion of the PS pulley then up to the alt. The PS then also is driven with a V belt from the mian crank pulley to the PS pulley.

Tha Alt belt will ride back down the underside of the alt pulley to the bottom of the PS pulley back to the Crank. It looks weird but is correct.

i noticed the same thing. the manuals don't list anything about this setup but my '93 has a collection of v belts and one 4 groove belt driving the alternator from the crank pulley 'over' the outside of the PS pulley. seems bizarre as the smooth PS pulley would be moving a slightly different speed and constantly rubbing against the inside of the grooved belt. can anyone else confirm this is correct? the belt i ordered from atlantic british is the same one that would fit this installation.

the rover manual says '93 is a single serpentine belt and the haynes says it is driven from the PS pulley as the OP describes.

check the belt that goes from the p.s. pump to the crank pulley it may be the wrong size. If its too big you won't be able to get the slack out of the alternator belt. Sorry just noticed your setup is different do you have any pics of your belt setup?
