Default 97 4.0SE cat issues

I have a 97 Range Rover 4.0SE. Cats are toast.. and I live in CA (you can imagine the nightmare I'm about to endure). However, I recently discovered that Magnaflow manufactures CA-legal cats that fit the P38a. I was about to celebrate until I ran into a slight problem:

The fitment guide in this listing shows that these cats fit EVERY year & motor of the P38a EXCEPT the 97 4.0SE. Can anyone tell me why this year is excluded? Is this just a typo?

Any help would be appreciated. Right now the Rover is a sitting duck with expired tags.

I've dismantled my fair share of P38a Range Rovers and the y-pipes were the same regardless of whether they were 4.0's or 4.6's. I would think that the omission of your particular year is an oversight. However, keep in mind that those listing on eBay that offer compatibility should always be considered a little suspect. To get the best information contact Magnaflow directly and ask them for compatibility especially with regard to CA emissions.

Thank you for the clarification. It definitely helped maintain some peace of mind when purchasing the cat. However, when I brought it to my local exhaust shop, I was told the part does NOT fit. This was slightly frustrating..

Exhaust guy was able to locate CARB legal Walker cats at a very affordable price. Pulled the trigger, had them installed, brought the car in for a smog check, PASSED with flying colors. In the end, I'm very pleased with the outcome of this situation. My Rover also performs much better now!

glad this worked out. out of curiosity, how did you know the cats were the problem? were you getting code P1314? had the car previously failed a CA smog test before you changed the cats?
