99 Range Rover HSE, Possible Engine Swap?
I have a 1999 Range Rover HSE with a 4.6L, when i start the vehicle there is a loud knocking sound.
My wifes dad bought her the car but her sister in law drove it while we were out of town and then the engine knock started.
I want to try to disassemble the engine and see whats wrong. Land Rover dealership says i need a new engine, but finding a local engine is difficult. Are there any other engines that will fit easily with little or no fabrication? Where can i find good prices on range rover parts?
I thought of just selling as it is, but her dad payed 4000 for it and i cant even get 2000 for it on craigslist.
All help is greatly appreciated.

A. Where are you?
B. Here in US, there are salvage yards that sell used engines, cheap, but many Rover engines are there because of head gasket problems.
C. You can do a little diagnosis first. By listening thru a yard stick (meter stick if you insist) held agaist valve covers, etc., you can localize the noise. Don't run engine more than a few seconds. You can also take spark plug wires off one at a time, it is thought that a connecting rod issue will decrease in noise as there are no explosions going on in that cylinder.
D. Bearings can be replaced without removing the engine. Writeups posted on this forum.
E. Download the RAVE shop manual, and have a look at what is involved before you just tear into it.
F. Plenty of places sell parts on line, Atlantic British is one.
G. We assume this is a loud knock, not a "tick".
