Default Classic Transmission and Transfer case question

I test drove a '91 Classic yesterday and was surprised to see that there was no diff lock like the Series I Disco has. Is it the same transfer case? If not can you put a Disco I transfer case in there?

second question is the Transmission itself. What is in there? Can you swap it with a Transmission from a Disco 1 in there?

I have a Series II disco but am interested in owning a Classic Range Rover too and was just curious since I have access to a parts 1996 Disco 1 too.

thanks

Fred

I see no reason to replace the tranny, as for the t/case, you currently have a Borg Warrner t/case with a viscus coupling, a LT 230 t/case will bolt in with a few changes, such as a new drive shaft, linkage and mounts.
I have a friend who specializes in Classic, shout if you want to get in touch with him.

How robust is the BW t-case compare to the LT-230? One thing I like about the LT-230 is the ability to drive in low range on dry pavement with the diff-lock unlocked. Can the BW unit do this?

There is also another Classic Rover with a bad trans for sale and that is why I was wondering if a series 1 disco t-case would fit the Classic.

Thanks,

Fred

Why would you want to drive in low range on the pavement, you are just burning up your viscus coupler.
The LT 230 is a much stronger t/c and was used in all the Discoverys.

How about the trans swap? Did they use the same trans?

Low range in dry pavement has been useful for me backing my boat uphill into a curvy driveway. Its pretty steep and in low range there seems to be a lot less stress on everything.

How exactly does a viscus coupler work?

Thanks again,

Fred
