Default Do I have the right oil dipstick?

99 RR 4.0. dipstick is just under 28" long. each time i change the oil (7 qts) the dipstick reads about 3/4"-1" over the full mark. i burn little oil and haven't really worried about it because i regularly check the level and change every 4-5k miles. the top end was redone about 25k miles ago and i'm wondering if they put the wrong dipstick in. did a search and didn't see anything and was wondering if anyone knows how long the dipstick is supposed to be. not a pressing issue but curious. TIA.

You are putting too much oil in it. You should be putting in 6 quarts, not seven. The dipstick sounds like it is reading correctly.

I put 5.75qts in mine. 7 is way too much. And... you check it every 5 to 7k miles WTH! Don't mean to sound disturbed, but I typically change the oil in my cars every 3k miles or less with the RR (usually 2k) even with synthetic. I MIGHT lose a 1/2 quart of oil between oil changes, if that. And its usually due to leaks and not because the RR is burning oil. If your RR is burning a lot of oil, you need to replace the piston rings. I'll measure my dipstick tomorrow and get back to you, even though 28" sounds about right.

i wondered if i was putting in too much oil, but the owner's manual says the capacity is 6.6 litres which translates into 6.97 quarts. (LR-fortunately, i check the oil weekly and change every 4-5k. let me know how long your dipstick is--thanks).

The seven quarts is for a dry (new) engine. Your engine holds about a quart after you drain it with the drain plug. So put in the six and you will be fine.
