Sounds like broken/leaking oil cooler line. You are going to have crawl under there and have a look.

Add oil 1/2 quart at a time to get back normal on stick and check for leaks like above.

Sounds like you just had the oil changed and they did not install the oil filter correctly.
BMW engine right? Oil filter is of the cartridge type on the top of the engine.
Where did you have the oil changed?
Whoever it was call them up and have them come out to you, DO NOT do anything, DO NOT add oil, DO NOT start it, call the shop/oil change place.

nah, the bmw motor has issues with the pcv hoses exploding cause the the cyclone separator goes bad. that is if the oil filter housing isn't leaking from the oring. But that is easy to see when you open the hood. basically if the pcv hoses are bad you end up having to put intake gaskets, and the coolant hoses and covers and all new hoses to fix the problem. about a six hour job. you don't need to pull the water pump, just do everything off the back side of the motor. But be careful. the plastic on the back of the intake breaks easily. But they can be had at a bmw dealer. In fact a bmw dealer is way cheaper because the parts are the same.
