Thumbs down do I need to replace my rotors? 2005 HSE

My brake light went on about a week and a half ago. I thought i needed to replace the back pads since I replaced the front ones 8 months ago.

When I first bought the car, I was told by the dealer that I needed to replace all pads and all rotors after 8 MONTHS which I know now is a bunch of BS.

So I thought I was going to have to replace my back pads this time and they are telling me I need front and back rotors and pads. I don't buy it.

I'm getting rid of this car in 10,000 miles when my $5,000 extended warranty, which didn't cover much since i have to pay $650 at 90,000 miles (to replace oil and air filters?!) coming up in the next month or so. The price to replace brakes and rotors front and back is $1,850 plus they want to get me for the $635 90,000 service. I do'nt want to put $2,500 into the car right now. I feel like selling the thing and putting $2,500 down on something else.

What is the minimum ROTOR thickness? I have had no problems with breaking, shaking, just a note that the light was on.
Supposedly my front rotor is at 26.6 and my back at 10.2.
I was told minimum front was 27 and back was 10.4. Seems like I could get away with keeping the back if that's the case and just getting the pads.

Thoughts? Are these specs even right? You can't get a manual online for this for free or this information anywhere from what I could tell and my car is in the shop right now. They said they would have the car back to my by thursday but as usual, I'm driving a rental minivan for a week. Standard.

First of all the extended warranty is NEVER worth it. Why do you think dealers are so eager to sell them? They make tons of money off them. If they were in your favor they wouldn't even tell you about them. You can do a complete brake job front and back with rotors and pads for under $300. It is an easy DIY.

You do not sound like a DIY guy to me, but if I am wrong listen to Krazz and do it your self. Brakes are one of the most misunderstood items on a vehicle no matter what make. Doing the work yourself will take maybe about 2 hours if you are nor familiar with how to do it and then when you sell it you can say you have new brakes and rotors on.

Extended warranties usually will do nothing for normal wear and tear items and they are a great source of revenue for the dealership since they really do not cover anything and you are so afraid when you buy your luxury vehicle you buy it. Pus it probably only changes payments by $20 a month so most take it. For me the way I drive a vehicle I would replace the rotors and pads at about this mileage just out of preventative maintenance. I am not sure what the tolerances are but you may want to take it to an indy brake shop and see what they say. There is nothing special about checking the thickness of a rotor and heck even Les Scwabb will do it for free.

On rovers, you almost always need to replace the rotors when you replace the brakes. They are heavy tanks that stop on a dime. Which really wears on the brake equipment. A tire place will probably charge you between 600 and 800 max for new brakes and rotors. If you want to save a few hundred, you can do it yourself. Was yours a Land Rover extended warranty?

Talking thanks.

No, I'm definately not a do it myselfer. I'm a woman so they always think I don't know what's going on and so they try to get as much as they can... $1,800 for that? I think I'll go pick up the car and tell them to shove it. I think I'll take it to Pep Boys and have them do it. I have to get the car smogged anyway.
And they also said I need my $635 service for 90 k to keep my extended warranty ( which did cover a few things, like when each side of my car's air suspension kicked out and I was driving a lopsided car, twice, or when they had to replace my whole nav system). It's a joke. They don't cover anything. Anything. Extended warranty should cover services, no?
AHHH!
ok, so this is what I get for $635: change engine oil and replace filter, reset service interval indicator, , check parking brake, check operation of all lights, warning indicators and horn ( all seem fine to me!) check condition of wiper blades and seats and seat belts? ( seriously?) check condition of wiper blades, clean battery ( I just had to replace it 4 months ago so it's probably clean - at my own expense of course) lube top flip seal on each door, replae pollen filter, nispect serpentine drive belt, check and top up brake and PAS and winshield washer fluid ( i know how to do that cause it was leaking before) change brake fluid, check coolant level, remove road wheels ( why?), inspect break pads and calipers for leaks and wear ( theyw ill be new, now, the brakes) check tire pressure ( I do that) check tires for tread depth ( just got those replaced too - $890) inspect for under vehicle fluid leaks ( that I would see on my garage floor ayway) inspect steering componenets for wae, check suspension bolts and fastenrs, inspect brake lines and fuil lines for leaks, corrosion or damage, ispecr PAS hoses for leaks, corrosion or damage, inspect air suspension pipes ad connectors/fittings for leaks and damage ( they just had to replace b oth sides, one month apart from one annother - this car is in the shop constantly) lubricate wheel centers and install road wheels on same axle, opposite side, perform anti corrosion check, road test vehicle, record performance in passport to service booklet ( big whoop) and muliti point vehicle inspecion. Package op code Ro590.
Is that worth $635 or should I tell Pep Boys to do that too?!
Thanks for your help. My dad was a mechanic but he's no longer alive so now I have no one to ask these questions to so you all are a big help. THanks a lot.

I think Pep Boys could be good for at least the brakes and doing the inspection stuff but if you can find an independent Land Rover shop you will get someone who really knows the Rover and will be a lot less than the dealer. Most of that 90K service is just checking on things that just about anyone can do. When looking at some codes that is where the indy shop comes in handy since they may have the equipment to read and diagnose the problem, Pep Boys usually has general diagnostic equipment. You should be able to save to quite a bit of money by doing it this other way and have a better experience with your Range Rover.

Yeah, servicing is not covered by any warranty. Some auto makers have recently thrown in service free of charge for the first 30k miles or so... As long as the service is performed, the warranty is still valid. Even if the work is not done by them. You just need to prove that it was done with recipients, etc.

Sears did my brakes for me. I looked at the rotors myself in Sears garage and I thought they looked fine. Think Sears charged me $175 to replace both front brake pads.

Didi they just replace the pads or did they do the rotors too? Getting away with $175 is better than what the dealer was trying to do.

Just the pads. I felt and the tech felt the rotors were fine. I think the dealers always give a standand answer on replacing the rotors. Just looked at my bill it was $174.98. Did this several months ago.
