Failed smog
Good Morning Ladies & Gents,
I recently failed a smog test, due to my CO%. The Limit is approx 1.1, I'm at 8.1
I'm basically burning RAW fuel. So I took it to a mechanic and he was baffled as to why there is NO engine light dancing on my dash? Everything is functional on the dash. So now I will need to leave it with him for at least a week to map out the cause. His thought is it could be the injectors or a lot of Carbon build up. If any one has experienced this issue before PLEASE OFFER ME SOME Insight of what may be causing this and worse case scenario of cost. it's a 99 RR 4.0s with 134k.
All the best,
Chaz

Being a 99 RR, is it a Bosch engine or a Gems engine?

If it were dumping that much fuel it should be throwing a ton of codes. What shop did you take it to? I'm local and there are only a few indy shops in the area that are worth a dam. Did the mechanic hook it up to a scanner? A week to even give you a rough estimate of what is going on is way too long imho.
I just bought it used about a 2 months ago. "I know, I know no smog cert..." The mechanic did not hook it up to the scanner. I just stopped in and wanted to see if i could get a quote first...due to finaces right now. He is an honest mechanic, but i'm assuming he doesn't have a scanner if it's going to take him a week to figure it out?? The shop only deals with Jags & LR/RR. Thanks for all your inputs
GEm Engine...

Does the engine warm up? Do your cats rattle? I would lean towards O2 sensors or dirty MAF or both. You should be able to see if the injectors are leaking by putting a fuel pressure gauge on it and seeing how long it holds pressure after turning the key off.
