RE: Gas
Just because gas is more expensive, that doesn't mean your Rover will now run on less expensive regular, won't happen.
You will loose at least 2 MPG, some low end power and carbon up your engine causing you Hundreds of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in repairs.
Do smart things to get the most from your gas, higher tire air pressure, better maintance, some additives once or twice a year, drive slower and shorter trips.

RE: Gas
well mine isn't a 2001 but it is a 1999 and i have always used 89 every blue moon i use 93 but i have been doing this for years and i have no major engine problems, but i am also an idiot when it comes to cars so take it for what it is worth. I fixed my gas problem. i walk 2 block take a bus and then take a metro train to my job. i now only drive when i get home so maybe 3 miles a day :-)

I have had two Discos that I always ran regular in. Between the two of them I put on over 80,000k with no engine problems. I did use Lucas fuel treatment every couple weeks and that may have helped keep things clean. I have only put a few thousand miles on my 4.6 HSE but haven't experienced any performance issues running regular.

It really does not cost that much more to run the proper gas. I would say on average the premium is about .20 more per gallon than regular. Based on a 20 gal fill up that is only $4, if that is too much money for a week of driving for you then maybe do not go eat at McDonalds one day and you will actually be making money ($6 for a meal).
Mike is right, if the cost bothers you then drive a different car some fo the time, I bet though the pay off fo the cost of that vehicle would equal many years of premium fuel for the Rover.
