Iv'e owned my 95 P38 for years and never had an issue with running low grade fuel. She now has 130 + K miles on the clock and runs like a Rolex.
She has never once given a hint as to pre-ignition (pinging) or any of the other maladies so readily bandied about. I have on occasion run premium grade fuel but i'll be damned if I can tell any difference in either performance or economy and the old girl still faithfully clocks a regular 18+ mpg at a steady 70 mph 30 mile round trip every day. I do run the odd bottle of STP fuel injector cleaner through her bowels every once in a while but at a dollar a treatment it is far cheaper than the 20 cents per gallon for the premium grade fuel touted at the gas stations.
I could see the benefit if you have a heavy right foot but for regular driving the gas companies can kiss my ****.

Chris.

run a tank of 89 with fuel conditioner like STP. if it atomizes better you won't notice the difference. However, at $.10 a gallon difference, STP is the same price or more as running premium unless you buy it bulk and have to deal with funnels, measuring cups and spilled junk on your car.

switch back to 93 next tank...

a trick I used on my transam 5.7L LS1 was to run 3% acetone -- but you MUST have 100% gasoline. Don't know the effect of acetone on your year's seals and so forth -- but it gave me 20% extra MPG on the vette-engined TA for 30,000+ miles over 6 months. it's really hard to find 100% gas these days -- E10 will get worse performance with 3% acetone -- as it increases surface tension of the alcohol. acetone significantly lowers surface tension of pure gas and makes 93 burn like 100 octane -- seriously... just don't ever get it on your paint and certainly be careful if doesn't tip over in your trunk between fills. 1 gallon is $13 and treats 300 gallons of gas. oh -- and it is an ingredient of several "fuel system cleaners" -- you will learn the smell and recognize it . BTW -- I never ran it in my 93 RRC because of the gasket-compatibility question. It about killed my GMC E85 Yukon -- new fuel pump at 90K....

Don't trust the distorted tests by the gas companies -- they don't wan't consumers to find ways of getting a 20%+ boost to fuel economy. instead they get $$$ govt subsidies to put in 10% alcohol and reduce gas mileage by 5-10% so you buy MORE gallons.
