Default Gearbox fault

Anyone have any idea what may be causing a "gearbox Fault" on my 2002 P-38. It only occurs when I first crank it in the morning and it clears if I simply turn it off and re-start it.

If I drive off with the gear fault It seems to stay in a lower gear and the sport/normal transmission button is then not functional.

Thanks for your help.

Wesley

Mine will do it on a VERY low battery. If your battery is strong, you probably have an electrical connection somewhere that is loose. I would first try cycling from HI range to LO and then back to HI. Make sure the vehicle is stopped, shift into neutral and slide the shifter over the H gate.

I just got that message today when I was driving. It is wet out, and the speedo and odo were working off and on. When I turned off the radio the gauges worked for a few minutes. I also have ABS and TC lit up. The climate control lights went off as well.

I just spoke to a good friend (mechanic) and he tells me my symptoms sound like a bad alternator. They are not cheap, but less expensive then a gear box.

skyguy: Get an alternator from a Salvage Yard. I bought one from a salvage yard for my DiscoveryII about 3 years ago for 50 bucks and put it on myself. I couldn't justify spending so much money for a new one or rebuilt one. No problems so far.

rangerooney: Oh, my god... So many problems.. I think your first order of business is to get a new key fob because it has to talk to the trucks computer system to allow the truck to crank. If your key has drowned in the washer I'm pretty sure it's not talking.

Just wanted to say I had my alternator rebuilt by a local shop here in Illinois, they did a great job it cost me $133 bucks and they replaced almost every part. I've been running for about 2 weeks now, and I have had no issues.
