Is this a good rover?
Hey everyone I am new to the forum but I have loved classic range rovers for a while and have been looking to buy one! There are only 3 for sale locally 2 1994s and 1995 and 2 of them are 10k way over my budget but yesterday a guy posted 1994 Lwb for 1000 dollars! It looks to be in good shape in side and out but there is some rust on the rear hatch( I hear that's common) and also the transfer case doesn't seem to be working? It runs and drives on 2wd. Does this seem like a good deal? I know a lot of it depends on maintenance and if it's been beaten on. How hard is it to replace the transfer case? Is it rebuildable? Thanks!

Yea I am pretty experienced with repairs. I have done all the repairs on my car for the last 4-5 years including and engine and tranny swap. I have just always heard the rovers are pretty different. I've only owned euro cars so that might help. how hard is it to rebuild the transfer case?

Old Rovers are way easier to work on than most cars. That probably has Borg Warner case in it. You could swap it for the better (insert forum argument here) LT230 case out of any Discovery. Much easier to find. Only needs minimum mods to work.
I don't know where you are but I have a complete BW case in my garage you can have for free. It worked great in the truck I pulled it from.

If you decide to go this route, let me know. I have a number of transfer cases and all the other bits as well.

Look out for ABS problems. Majority of the parts for the ABS system are now out of production. Stuck using used parts if needed.
The transfer case on a 94 rr has a viscous coupling; most likely why it is stuck 2wd.
I agree with changing to a LT230 transfer case for more reliability and better performance, especially on the dirt.
This some pretty advanced work and would recommend this to someone is a season mechanic.
