Default a little help with a 1997 LR

I am interested in buying a Land Rover which needs some work. The guy trying to sell the vehicle said there is a ticking noise coming from the engine. I have posted the craigs list ad so you all can see it. I just want to know if this is something I should get into? Questions I need to ask? and things I should look for when checking out this vehicle? Or does anyone have an inkling of what this could be?

Thank you so much

The tick is usually a lifter, but not always. Sometimes it is the camshaft being worn down. When and if you go look at it, tell us where the noise is coming from. Lower engine noise is most likely a camshaft, whereas upper engine noise is usually the lifter. A ticking noise can also be a leak in the exhaust manifold. If you want to know exactly what it is and how expensive/hard it is to repair, we are going to need a bit more info.

My Disco's have a tick and so does my RR, they can drive forever if it is lifter but is just annoying. It sounds like the guy is not too familiar with Rovers so you could talk him down a bit on the price.

thank you to everyone that has helped in this.
What would be fair to offer? He said it could be one of three things...sticky valve, bad rod, or a loose pistin. He emailed me back and said he did a bit of research. Does anyone know how much it would be to fix these problems, and is this worth the time and energy?

Thanks again!

i would look for another one. it will need some other work like the front drive shaft rebuilt and the head gaskets. you should check and see if those two things were done if not then i would say offer him $1,000.

I doubt its a loose piston. These engines are pretty solid, but have head gasket issues and suffer from warped blocks if not taken care of properly. For the sake of doing business, offer him 1k for it and see if you can get it for a steal. Right now its probably worth $2200 or so... Before anything, I would have it inspected by a good mechanic.
