Default Looking at a 1993 Classic

w/ 115k, Old Man Emu coils and springs, calipers and brakes. still have to see it for myself. asking 2k, perhaps a bit lower...

even if the engine looks up to par should this be something i should avoid? is the up-keep on this vehicle any different from that of a mid-90's d1?

The electronics are a bit different, and odd in some cases. As far as the engine goes, its the same. Just remember that they use an ABS pump instead of a master cylinder, and that its a borg warner transfer case and requires ATF not gear oil. 2k is a descent asking price, if you can get it for 1700 and its in good condition, I'd go for it.

Listen to LRScott, if you can get it a little less I am sure it will be a great vehicle for you. Let us know if you buy it.

the fellow has had it for over a year, bought it off ebay. no idea what it may have been through with previous owners but as i said i've yet to see it myself.

its either that or a 95 D1 manual w/ 85K for a little over 3k. considering the slight differences between the two engines is it possible to ask if one engine is sturdier than the other or less trouble prone than the other?

My experience with the classic engines, is they seem to last a big longer than most other rovers, if taken care of properly. I think it is due to the fact they run cooler than the later GEMS engines that are on the Discovery and RR p38. Only thing I don't like about the classic is... LUCAS. Just be prepared for some strange little electrical problems from time to time. They will just come and go for no apparent reason. The Discovery will be easier to diagnose than the classic because of the OBD II. However, for the money, if its in good condition, I would definitely buy the RR. A little while back, I drove an old 1989 RR with over 200k miles on it. Everything worked great, the a/c was cold engine ran very smooth, shifts were fine, etc. It wasn't in the greatest cosmetic condition, but it just kept on going. I almost bought a 1988 RR classic here locally. Ran fine and what not, but needed A LOT of preventive maintenance done and plenty of TLC. It was very neglected, but the owner only wanted $750 for it. I was too slow . I kind of want a little classic that I can restore.
