There should not be any caps on the lugs but there is a silver cover thats pressed onto the lugnut it stays on you need a big socket and breaker bar, use anti seize on the lugs when you install them

If you cannot get the socket on then you may need a big hammer to get it on. You will probably mess up the cover on it but sometimes you need to do it to get them off. Other than that you may need to use vice grips to rip it off then use the hard steel underneath. Good luck!

Make sure you have a 1 1/16" Socket. I personally think these lugnuts have the worst design imaginable. I have yet to find one that I couldn't get off but they sometimes take a bit of work. Get a good dead blow hammer and beat that socket on. Then add a good breaker bar and you should be all set. You may have to jump on it a bit but it will come off.

1 and 1/16th. 6 point.
You never take the caps off, if you do you are looking at a new set of lugs at about $22 a piece, new.

Mike, I agree with you. If you can avoid taking off the cap then do it. If your lugs are so messed up because a tire shop used a 1 1/8 12 point on it then you may just be out of luck. If you do need new ones because yours are messed up go look at your local wrecking yard. I buy mine there for $1 each. I take out my 1 1/16 impact socket and of it does not slide on easily then I do not buy it and find some better condition ones. With the cash for clunkers deal there were a lot of good lug nuts sitting around and not being used.
