Default Mark III no start after replace fuel pump

Car hesitated once or twice a few weeks ago then just stopped running after I parked it for a few hours. Had it towed home. No fuel pressure at the rail. Relay and fuse tested good. Pump still no go. Eventually removed the pump and tested outside the car and it ran. Checked electrical connector at the top of the pump and it was corroded. filed it and cleaned it up and re-installed the pump making sure that it was seated correctly, the internal hoses connected well an that all the O-rings seated. turned it over and there was fuel at the rail and the pump was running with what seamed like good pressure. There was fuel spiriting out of the rail under pressure when the car cranked. PROBLEM - the vehicle only sputters and barely starts and doesn't really run. Looking for any recommendations!
