Default new to the forum looking at a 98 RR 4.0 SE

My name is Tory and I'm new to the forum. I'm going this weekend to look at a 98 RR 4.0 se, it has 99,000 miles on it and they are asking $6,495. The dealer told me there are no problems with it but is there anything I should look for while I'm there? What is a common failure item on those? I'm not familiar with Land Rovers and this will be my first one if I decide to purchase it. Also I have people telling me that I should get the 4.6 HSE not the 4.0 SE. Is there any real difference between the 2 other than the engine?
Thanks everybody!

The only real difference between the 4.0 and the 4.6, is trim and power. The interior is usually a little more plush, but not much. I think you get black pipping on the leather seats or something... The price is pretty high, even for that low of miles. If it is absolutely immaculate and has all service history with it, I would buy it if you can get them to $5500 or under. As for the things to look for, just make sure it doesn't overheat and everything works, check for leaks etc. Not a whole lot different from any other car. See if the air springs have been replaced by coils.

You may be dissappointed with the SE as the 4.0 L engine is somewhat underpowered for a truck of this weight. You could probably find a nice HSE with the 4.6 L engine for that price. But like LRScott said, look for leaks and inquire about the EAS system and whether or not it is fully functional or if the system has been swapped out for coil springs. Also, if you get this truck, you will need to replace the head gasket pretty much right away if it has not already been done. Good luck with your search and purchase.

Type your thread title into the search field and you will get some real detail on what to look for. We should make a sticky of what to look for when buying one of these.
