I have a 2001 RR. When it is cold, there is a rattle/noise from the middle section of the exhaust. Most of the noise stops when it warms up. Or I can stop it by holding the heat shield.

Any idea of what it is?

Is this the cat or a muffler? What is likely replacement cost?

Where abouts is it on the exhaust system? I know you said middle, but can you be more specific. If it is a heat shield, you can usually tighten the bolts and the rattle will stop.

 

Update:

After some suggestions that it might simply be the heat shield, I found a repair suggestion on following website. I restained the heat shield using the exhaust by using 4 large hose clamps. I will say that it has only seen about 50 mils since then so time will determine the success. So far so good.
