Oil change
Hello, I have a '93 RR lwb County and I want to change the fluids. It has approx. 90k miles. I run Mobil 1 synthetic in my other cars. Is this ok for the Rover? Also, do you recommend a trans. flush? Thanks for the help!
The synthetic is great. A tranny flush and filter would also be a good thing.
It would however be a waste of money to put it in this particular before doing a coulple things.
You will want to clean the oil pan and sump pick up.
On this vehicle this is very easy. The oil pan lip is completely flat and it just drops out.
The oil pan gasket is about $9 and comes in one piece.
It took way longer to clean it than it did to remove and install it.
Click this link to another discussion; it has pics of my oil pan at twice the milage(167,000).
Ticking Noise Discussion
After that; run new oil for a few miles to get any leftovers blown through and change it over then.
Your oil pan may not be this bad, but do you really want to run $5 a quart oil through a sludge pit?
You may be able to just run a "flush" through the motor, but there is much debate here about the value of doing that.
This motor should run 250,000 miles plus if properly maintained and lubricated.

Other then you are prone to generating oil leaks in older engine that have alway been run on Dino guh in the past, you should be fine. I would suggest doing a good engine oil flush on the engine before you change the oil.
Use a heavier oil, 10/40 or 20/50 depending on your seasons.
As for the tranny, it is too old to flush, just do fluid and filter changes every 20,000 miles and you will be fine.
Good luck,
Mike

Again, there is much debate over use of chemical "flushes".
As Mike mentioned; with the lower mileage you can probably get away with just a good chemical clean if you want.
Add motor "Flush"of your choice if you so desire, run 5 minutes, drain, pour a quart of regular oil through and let it drip out and then fill with the synthetic and you should be good.
The transmission flush is your call. Some will say it is a must and others will cringe at the idea. I will throw this in... I have had automatic transmissions that went from bad to dead after a chemical flush, but if it's healthy; it is truely your call.
Mike may have further insight as to why not to use a chemical flush.

I agree exactly.
Trannys can shifting fine, flush them and now they may have a pressure problem cause the laquer and build up that forms inside the case is no longer there to help maintain the warn out seals.
Just do a fluid and filter change and go wheeling.

Mike, doing all my tune up on my new to me 98 HSE... it has 132k..... tranny, as far as i can tell and feel, runs golden.... would you recomend the tranny flush and synthetic swap? how much fluid does the tranny hold? roughly?
Thanks!

Thanks!

Just do a drain and fill, at your mileage, I wouldn't even change the filter. For a treat for your tranny, add a bottle of Lucas tranny additive and what ever you do don't flush it, you have to many miles to start flushing it now.
Good luck.
Good luck.
