Default Are People Nicer to You in a Big SUV?

A thing that I have noticed over the past 15 months of owning the Range Roveris that people seem to be nicer to me in traffic when I am in the big SUV. They don't ride my bumper very often, don't pull tooclose at lights, fewer people cut in front of me and more people let me in. This is the 100% opposite experience from when I am in my Porsche.

I swear that I am notimagining this. Anyone else with the same experience?

Yep. I don't think it's a matter of "being nice to you" but rather the reverse - trying to stay out of your way. Kind of the opposite of riding a motorcycle - they may see you but they don't consider you a threat so they merge into your lane/ride your tail/etc.

Try driving a Pinzgauer - it's got the size advantage, plus drivers around me probably think I'm nuts, so I get a few extra feet from that!

I'm not sure that "nice" is the word to use either - maybe "respect?" Being in NYC both are in short supply anyway, especially on the roads
at this time of year. Now, doormen, parking attendants, etc. are more than respectful and obliging when we pull up in one of the Rovers or
the Cayenne but I think that primarily has to do with the assumed expectation of monetary gain. We have an Excursion also though for ski trips, etc. complete with brush guards and all that people truly do get out of the way when we're in that...don't think they're being as nice as they
are being smart...

I have to agree with the others. Seems they are trying to stay out of the way. I don't have the opposite happen with the maserati but it is a bit of a novelty where I live so that may have something to do with it. It's also a bit of a screamer so people tend to make a path. I also think more people make way for my old P38 then the MKIII. It does look more capable of causing real damage to other cars though. I still wish they would made brushguards and light guards for the MKIII that compare.

Either way it is really nice! Also, I agree MLS that you do get more respect from the doormen, valet's, etc. and they often will park the Range Rovers out front which is kind of neat.

JustFred, I had to look up what Pinzgauer was and I would think you were crazy also! Is color is yours (military green)?

I have not necessarily noticed folks getting out of the way, but looking at the car with both respect and jealousy has been seen. Many will compliment the beauty of this truck, and then there are those that give you an "evil eye" for having the right to own such a vehicle. I find that depending on what kind of work you do, it makes a difference which one of your vehicles you decide to drive to work. If you need to be more humble, drive a different vehicle. People look at you differently when you drive this truck, whether you notice or not, or whether you are willing to admit it or not.

I used to own a Hummer H2 several years ago, and you want to talk about people getting out of the way?! There was never a doubt at a red light who would go first, or never a second thought at who would back out first in a parking lot. People did give you respect/space in the Hummer.

Luxury1, In the 997 as in our 993 everyone thinks they are in a race and if the pass you they win. In the Rover people just get out of the way, or they want to give you the finger, I don't really understand that but that seems to be a rule of thumb. I just laugh and wave.[8D]

The hummer definitely looks meaner. I think part of it is that you see so much of its exposed HUGE front tires. The H2 is very capable off road. I have had driven the H1 and H2on a very serious off road course and they both didan amazing job. The H2 is almost as capable as the H1 which is impressive for an SUV that is so much less expensive.

You are so right about people wanting to race with the Porsche's. You could be going to the store to get milk and some stupid idiot starts to taunt you. It is really annoying because I don't want to race especially one a public road!
