Default Ramsey 8000 lb winch?

I found a used Ramsey 8000lb winch with remote 4 sale. The RRC weighs 6019lbs. Is Ramsey a good winch, and how do I install? Does our truck have a winch mount already installed (1992 RRC)? Or do I have to weld it, buy bumper mount, etc.? Thanks

Ramsey is a good winch and can work great for years. The usual rule for winches is that you get one that is 1.5X your vehicle weight, so you should really have a 9000# winch. The issue is that if you doubled the line using a ****** block then it will double the pulling power just much slower and shoter distances. For me a winch is to get me out of trouble so anything you just about get is better nothing so the 8000# would work. Chances are you will never use it or very little but if it a good price get it.

You will need a winch bumper or weld one up yourself, I do not believe there was ever a standard tray for RRC.

I was going to say go for a 10,000 lb winch. I would get a 2" receiver cradle mount for the winch. Then just get a 2" receiver mounting bracket made for the frint. This will allow you to use it in the front and the rear and also remove it from the elements when it is not needed.

Ramsey's are excellent winches, and usually live a long life, even if abused. I think 8,000 is enough to probably get you out of most situations. I have a Ramsey 10,000 that is at least 20 years old and still works like a champ - it lives on my wood hauler F250 camp beater so it gets no maintenance or cover.

For your purposes, if you are not going to be doing hardcore offroading all that much, consider the option krazzz laid out. You can get a winch mount for a 2" hitch fairly cheap. So all you need to modify on your truck is getting a front 2" receiver and having the power plugs routed with quick disconnects somewhere close. I'd run the power to both front and rear, then you could winch from either end.
