Shaky steering wheel tie rod?

In the bimmer world this issue is always control arm bushings, I still nned to take a closer look at the Rangie set up, BUT a set of ramps and a long pry bar should find your culprit in under 20 min.

I had a 90 525i E34 with that wobble at about 230k miles, replaced the shocks and it took care of the death wobble, did the tie rods later at about 250k, got it up to 338k miles then gave it to my cousin who promptly over reved it in 2nd gear and broke the timing belt.

One other culprit could be the steering box. You wouldn't know until you replaced it with a new/re manned unit. They found a lot of play in the steering system on a disco in the show "Wheeler Dealers". They jacked it up, some one would hold a wheel, while the other gently moved the steering wheel back and fourth. Eventually they found the play to be in the steering box.

funny you mention that LR scott, same problem with my e34, but the steering box on the RR is good, you can also tell when it's parked by shaking it without someone in the car. The steering box is very tight. I can live with it on the car for now, after I get my dealer lic back and I find a cheap parts car or someone with parts I may do it but don't plan on spending money on this car, someone can buy it from me or I will drive it into the ground or trade it in for whatever most likely.

Mechanic says I need a drag link assembly for my old 1996 RR HSE. Anybody familiar with "ALL MAKES ENGALND" (cost $88 for one complete assembly) and LEMFORDER brand ? (cost $140 for one complete assembly). Plus do I need to change both rods at the same time even though one of them is good ? Thanks.

FWIW, I just received a TRE replacement kit from Atlantic British that consisted of one Lemfoerder LH and three All-Makes4x4 Chinese-made RH joints. The Lemforder appears to be of considerably better quality: larger, sturdier boot; much thicker stronger boot clips; stainless steel ball/threaded shaft (not yellow zinc); broader washer; better packaging with plastic caps protecting the boot and threads.

I don't know if any of this stuff makes a measurable difference in performance or durability, but I'll be returning the Chinese joints and picking up new Lemforders from Amazon for $32/ea. I've attached a photo ; the Lemforder is on the bottom.
