Timing Chain
This might be a nube question but I'm having the hardest time figuring it out.
I've been having some timing issues with my 95 RRC 4.2. My most recent project is to replace the camshaft and lifters to get better performance and figure out my timing issues. I pulled off the water pump and began to examine the timing chain. The chain seems a little "loose", but I've only dealt with dirt bike chains ect... The man before me installed a re manufactured engine, the internals look bran new, besides the camshaft.
My question is, how much "play" should the timing chain have and where should the timing marks be on the timing chain assembly "sprockets"?
In order for the engine to run "before I took it all apart" I had to advance the dizy far ahead of the recommended book settings.

see attached from overhaul manual section of RAVE, a pretty handy shop manual set that is free for the downloading. This is from the v8e overhaul manual for 3.5/3.9 and 4.2 engines. Another section covers 4.0 - 4.6 engines.
