What weight of Oil
I just bought a 1998 Range Rover SE 4.0 V8, it has 103000 miles on it and runs great, the last owner used 10w 40 regular oil, now I am a synthetic oil person, that being said what oil do you use? When I went to the parts store they said mine should use 5w 50, yet another place said 10w 40.
I want to use Mobil 1 so what weight should I use for my area, Tacoma Washington?
Thanks, and if you have a oil filter recomandation please tell me.

Well today I took my 98 RR to the local RR dealer to have it serviced and looked at, they changed the oil and put in 5w 40 syntec and a land rover oil filter, the bad news, after coming home and letting it sit I checked the dip stick and it is 1/2 inch above the full mark.
This to me is a sloppy oil change. I knew I should have done it myself, I left a message with the service person, will see tomorrow what they say. I will probably end up just draining out a half quart, the last thing I need is problems from too much oil.

I talked to the service rep today, he said that 1/2 inch above the full mark was no problem because that
is really only 1/4 of a quart.
I'm going to drain out some and find out if that is true. I have had better service at a jiffy lube.

Haha most of the Range Rover Service Shops are pretty bad from what i've heard. I just use a locally owned oil change shop and they were actually pretty good. They didn't like me bringing my own oil but since they didn't have it they agreed to it. I was actually impressed with the service and take it back anytime I don't have the time to do it myself.
Finally got a syphon and after sucking oil up the dipstick for a half hour slowely I am now exactly on the full mark.
So just abit over 1/2 inch above the full mark which the service guy said was no problem and probably only 1/4 quart
turns out to be 28 ounces, that is 3/4 of a quart overfilled, I'm going to call him on monday and tell them what I feel.
Note to self, Never leave any oil change place without having them show you the dipstick after it sat for abit.
Oh, the weight they say to use is 5w 40, I went with synthetic castrol.
